hanging from the poles
scarecrow wants the silver shoes
a random wish
to walk on the yellow bricks
holding hands with the giant head
not that he can do much
in his precarious state
tired he falls asleep
chasing a kitten in his dreams
even though he is in love with that witch
when she melts away
he promises himself
that he will take revenge
now the perching is of his own choice
it reminds him of his vow
biding his time, still biding his time
A fascinating reimagining of the Wizard of Oz character. I like it. A lot of good description, surreal.
ReplyDeletewow. great description...and i like too the allusion to Oz...nice one shot!
ReplyDeleteCut the last line. Otherwise, I liked it.
ReplyDeleteGreat poem! Halloween, Wizard of Oz, revenge. It's wonderful!
ReplyDeleteLove the reference to the Wizard of Oz and the collage effect of the imagery - nicely done
ReplyDeleteGood take on the Wizard - not at all wicked. Enjoyed it. Gay @beachanny
ReplyDeleteA good one Gautami. Nicely written.
ReplyDelete"chasing a kitten in his dreams" -- wonderful
ReplyDeleteA delightful scarecrow!
I like the 2nd stanza a lot! Ok I like how everything flows.
ReplyDeleteisn't that the way of things: give them will, and they want to use it.
ReplyDeleteLove the dream kittens.
hanging from the poles...i like how you start this...gives a lightweight feeling to the whole poem
ReplyDeleteI love this, can picture this scarecrow hanging there wishing for what he cannot have - just like humans often do! At least he has his dreams.
ReplyDeleteOne of the best Oz characters. Good poem, if slightly surreal! BTW I love the last line...
ReplyDeleteMelts away.. biding his time.. nice stark words... I liked reading this one..

Gautami,
ReplyDeleteI love the dream kittens.
Excellent to prompt.

I like the whole poem, but especially love that last and final line. You took this one to a very different place: the scarecrow in love with the witch! But, then everyone needs someone to love and hopefully someone to love them.

Where there is hope.... however fragile... Nice poem of the Oz scarecrow.
ReplyDeleteHow i love your scarecrow! Those last two lines really nailed it.
ReplyDeleteLovely.
Nice postscript to the Wizard of Qz. I liked it a lot.
ReplyDeleteDuty comes first eh?
ReplyDeleteA darker take on the scarecrow that I adore. Well done.

oooh love this... the yellow road, the giant head... excellent poetry, friend. thanks so much for linking!
ReplyDeleteMulti-layered, ref'd, creepifyin' of the scarecrow image - which, compared to real-life bad people - is positively comforting to me.
