when the sole of my shoe fell apart
I twisted my ankle
my knees gave away
I fell on the ground
my shin bone hurt
my elbows balanced my body
my cheeks pressed to the ground
I give away to tears
why when everything was going good
my shoe fell apart
taking me down
(serves me right)
I will not hitch a ride
I will muster my strength
from the wine I drank
in the late afternoon
"I want to call out, where are you
but who cares?
I will sleep hugging the earth"
A philosophical outlook.♥
ReplyDeleteVery well done. I can remember something like this happening when I used to wear heels and one came off. You've also reminded me I need to go shoe-shopping this week. I'm of an age now when falling is quite likely, so I only wear high-quality flat shoes with orthotic insoles and I'm down to just one pair, which is almost worn out.
ReplyDeleteYour writing is excellent.

oo very evocative..not just the fall but the desire to cry out in hopes maybe that someone hears...
ReplyDeleteI like the specificness of the poem's question, not "why" but "why NOW?", and the depiction of the stages in the downward crumple.
ReplyDelete(P.S. I don't mean I enjoy the crumple! but how you depict it!)
ReplyDeleteIts beautiful... I liked it a lot... Thanks for sharing..

That's rough. As the years pass, fear of helplessness increases for me. This captures just such a fear.
ReplyDeleteWaiting to be seen and heard, beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThe bottom of our shoes tell many stories..you have told this one beautifully as ever..Jae
ReplyDeleteI guess everything is connected to the shoe umm sole, great verse.
ReplyDeleteYou have done this well!!
ReplyDeleteI see the determination to get back on those feet ~
"taking me down

I will muster my strength"
The last lines are sad when timely help is not coming forth!!
from the soul....nicely done and thanks for sharing
ReplyDeletenicely done. those darn heels always trying to pull you down.
ReplyDeleteInteresting use of the three words; thanks.
ReplyDeleteGood metaphor, nicely executed
ReplyDeletePerhaps a little too much wine?
ReplyDeleteI loved the pace and pathos in this piece. Great work
ReplyDelete(serves me right) stayed with me and I went back to re-read. It makes me wonder when I fall, where have I gone wrong. Is hubris at the core of most falls? Thought-provoking.
ReplyDeleteWhen you've gotta go (down) you gotta go!
ReplyDeleteI sure hope this wasn't a true story! If so, I hope you're OK :)
ReplyDeletehow amazing,
ReplyDeletelove the wording.
Life has a way of tripping you up when you least expect it.
ReplyDeleteHello.
ReplyDeleteWe will trip, stumble & fall, but our inner voice always compels us to pick ourselves up & keep on moving.
You expressed this very well.
Thanks for sharing, Gautami.
