the highs, the lows

she lets her hands be her eyes
slowly shaping the contours
she lets herself pour over it
the softness changing into hardness
controlling each movement
she can feel each of the nuances
the highs, the lows
exactitude of pressure
when she achieves her utmost desire
she opens her eyes
smilesat what is beneath her hands

"her master piece is ready
when the potter's wheel stops"

  1. This is a tricky little poem...all along you are thinking about one thing and then at the end you surprise us with something else! Terrific!

  2. very nice gautami,

in the body of the poem, it's something like ...hmmm...

but in the end, you will know she's a potter!

very beautiful work of a poet...:)

  3. Nice the way you toy with us in this one, Gautami, make us think it's a sex poem when it's arts and crafts. Nice.

  5. Hmm. A metaphor in the wheel, at least from my desk and keyboard I am thinking... it is a metaphor, my dear poetic friend.

Enjoyed the heck out of your words today, as always.. Thank you!

  6. The poem keeps moving to the conclusion with the rhythm and use of interesting verbs like "shaping", "changing", "controlling" winding up in the master piece, that is your poem Gautami. Thank you for sharing this clever poem!

  7. from Therese L. Broderick -- thank you for giving me a new way of "seeing" pottery -- I used to think it was about inside/outside, but you help me to see it's also about high/low. I think "high/low" can be metaphoric, also; that is, the making of hands-on pottery can be a way to lift one's spirits, to rise from sadness to joy.

  8. You've given us a terrific picture of what the master Potter does with souls. Shaping, forming, moving toward the finished product, which will be a reflection of truth and goodness.

    Very thoughtfully written.

  9. Hi Gautami,

Very sensual, which is what I imagine throwing a pot can be like for a potter.

  10. I love the idea of the hands as eyes, with all the great synesthesia this leads to, and how the creator becomes confluent with the creation in such a physical way, wonderfully described.

  12. Odd, how much what we bring to a reading affects what we read. I saw the moon from the prompt photo shaping the earth, the tides, with highs and lows of pressure and pull. It isn't that much different in the end.

  13. The picture did make me think of pottery for a bit too. You mislead and tease effectively here.

  17. Interesting...you lead us in one direction with your construction of innuendo and then surprised us with your ending. Nicely done.

  18. There is something very sensual about this piece, as there is about creating a pot on a wheel. A lovely piece with a perfect ending.

  20. this was beautifully crisp! Like Cynthia says, the thoughts abruptly migrated from blindness to a creator!
