serrated leaves, blossoming out towards light
slowly unfurl to its warmth, soaking it all in
filtered light through branches forming a mesh
protecting the tiny green chlorophyll structures,
from the harshness of beating heat of red-hot sun.
seeping water from the soil, floods the veins
photosynthesis takes place, plants prepare food
for you and me, keeping not one bit for their own
use. shedded flowers fall to the ground, fruits
bear sweet aroma of rains, sunshine and soil.
newly formed seeds prepare for the next cycle,
renewal of life so familiar yet unforgettable.

And now for the very famous song by Nat King Cole. I heard it for the first time in the early 80s. It remains one of my favourite songs till date. It still reminds me of my teenage crush....:D
Unforgettable, that’s what you are
Unforgettable though near or far
Like a song of love that clings to me
How the thought of you does things to me
Never before has someone been more
Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that’s how you’ll stay
That’s why, darling, its incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too
Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that’s how you’ll stay
That’s why, darling, its incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too.
~~~Nat King Cole
Oh gautami if science books about photosyntheses would be written like that who doesn't want to learn about it.
ReplyDeleteTeen age crushes are unforgettable he
Beautiful pure and simply beautiful
ReplyDeleteThe Nat King Cole was one of my grandma's favourites (and so is one of mine). I like your poem, especially the last two stanzas.
ReplyDeleteI grew up listening to that Nat King Cole song - and it was what first jumped into my head when I saw the prompt!
ReplyDeleteOnce again a great post.
ReplyDeletegautami,
ReplyDeleteNature always, and teeage crushes: Both bring us the UNFORGETTABLE.
I like how you made photosynthesis unforgettable by linking the plants to us. We do take them for granted.
ReplyDeleteI think everyone is singing Nat King Cole today.
'fruits
ReplyDeletebear sweet aroma of rains, sunshine and soil'
LOVE these lines. As for 'Unforgettable', this is divine:
'Like a song of love that clings to me
How the thought of you does things to me
Never before has someone been more
Unforgettable'
(sigh!) Gautami, I've tagged you for a hometown meme! Check it out...
"renewal of life so familiar yet unforgettable", so very true and beautiful...its such a beautiful gift. And 'unforgettable' is one of my fav. toos. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteOh, very nice! I really liked plants prepare food for you and me, keeping not one bit for their own use - I know people who are like that, too, always pouring out what others need and not being selfish.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Circle of life and Nat King Cole, what could be better. Nothing!
ReplyDeleteOnly you can make science so poetic. You had much better taste in music than I did in the 80's.
ReplyDeletetami, beautiful my friend as always. The one problem I had in trying to write a poem in a hurry was that wonderful song of Nat King Cole. I just could not get it out of my mind. Well written and mathematically correct.
You turned science into beauty.
ReplyDeleteas a student would have loved to study science like this :)
ReplyDeleteLove the song as well. Great poem.
ReplyDeleteI, too, love that song - an unforgettable poem!
ReplyDeleteGautami
ReplyDeleteWhen I read the prompt, I immediately started humming this song. It goes well with your own well written words, xo
Gillian
Oh, I love "the aroma of rain, sunshine and soil!" I love the science in your poetry.
ReplyDeleteNeat take on the prompt. The kids and I watched Happy Feet today (no school for them) and we've all got the environment on our minds.
ReplyDeleteWhen you publish a book, let me know, I want to buy a copy for myself, maybe more for gifts...
ReplyDeleteYour poem has a fullness of language and a texture that reminds me of fruit. The poem itself is organic and rich like the plants it describes. Lovely.
ReplyDeletethat was very complicatedly simple... such an amazing series of events,, captured so beautifully....
ReplyDeleteOnly you can make photosynthesis sound so beautiful! Great minds think a like on the Nat King Cole song! hehe
ReplyDeletewell said gautami
ReplyDeletethe cycle goes on
(and i too have always loved that song)
The cycle of life whether plant, human or animal always amazes me. You have taken what could be a purely scientific post and made it beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree...if Science were taught in such a way as you described the beautiful process here, more people would be totally enamored and eat up every word. You painted a picture with words that helps me visualize a concrete concept. Thank you as always my friend.
ReplyDeletea beautiful poem...and wish science was taught this way ;)
ReplyDeletePhotosynthesis and Nat King Cole - what an amazing leap you took to bring these two ideas together. Truly unforgettable.
ReplyDeletesomply beautiful!
ReplyDeleteand a great song to boot
I loved your poem - I read it over several times.
ReplyDeletethe sentience you gave those plants! i kept forgetting that they were plants.
