moth or mammoth

a moth hovers on ground
its wings broken
only a few hours
but its life cut short
I pick it up
place it on my palm
pitifully it watches me
(or so I think)
time does not travel for it
radial light beckons it
with much effort
dangerously dangling
it rises and falls to the ground.
nothing gets done. nothing gets done.

  1. I think a moth only lives 24 hours. So sad, really, compared to our lives! And then there's the mammoth...

  10. Remind me of mayfly somehow :) It can only live 30minutes to a day once it reached its adulthood, life is really short:<

  17. So many broken moths, but yet, it could have been a butterfly. And therein lies sorrow for a beautiful life cut short.

  18. A sad little poem. One can read it for what it is, or as something symbolic.

I found a stunningly beautiful moth on vacation one year. It looked like it had been painted by Zunis or some other Native American tribe. Nature is so amazing.

  19. I loved "moth or mammoth." I have a photo I took of a luna moth when I was at a writers retreat recently. I hadn't realized until then that this type only lives 24-76 hours and in the moth phase they have no mouth and that their only function is to procreate. It was living on the ceiling in the lodge where I slept and when it began "rising and falling", I took it outside where it could die peacefully in the green grass.

  20. Nothing gets done..yet everything gets done - albeit quickly. Beautifully put..as brief, mighty and succinct as the moth's life itself..thanks for your visit..Jae

  21. I enjoy imagining you holding that moth. I have written poetry about insects from time to time so reading this one delights me...

  22. Lovely poem - my garbled thoughts
properly expressed. I wonder if moths feel time at the same pace that we do.
