Inertia----Villanelle---Poetry Thursday

This week, Poetry Thursday gave us the option of posting anything we liked, which is given as it's a free day. I almost did not write anything but finally wrote what I had been feeling all day today. State of Inertia. We all face it and come through. I too came through. Maybe writing it down helped. I have tackled it in the form of a villanelle. I am kind of enamoured by the structure after detesting it for so long!!

I post my first draft here. I will edit it soon. Or not if I don't want to.

Inertia

With not so much as a movement of my eyes
I stare unseeingly at nothing in particular,
words are passing back and forth like dice.

Images focus, get blurred, answering whys
gets so tough. Thoughts cease, get dipolar,
with not so much as a movement of my eyes.

All seem to be in a perpetual motion, surprise
is still not something I feel, more of an insular.
Words are passing back and forth like dice.

Stillness within the mind, enhanced, demise
of rationality, disorder of reflection registers.
With not so much as a movement of my eyes,

I contemplate ending the state of limbo; “unwise
decision,” tells me my inner self. Now spectacular
words are passing back and forth like dice.

Inertia of thoughts stops suddenly- goodbyes
exchanged. I am yet again amazed, stellular;
with not so much as a movement of my eyes;
words are passing back and forth like dice!

  5. Hi Gautami,

No, you're the best. :) I'm glad that your writing inertia has been overcome. I understand how difficult it is.

P.S. I'm dizzy from watching the dice go back and forth. ;)

  6. gautami,
Even when we seem to be paralyzed and we can't find a focus to write about, we find a poetic way to say so. ;-)
Well done. I think you have found a way with the villanelle.

  7. Hi Gautami,
I like that you wrote another villanelle. The rhyme seemed strange to me in the beginning but then I started to stop looking at the structure and start looking at the poem. I think I got really stuck on the whole villanelle thing last week. This was a really moving poem and I have been in places in my life where I seemed to be moving quite a bit while just staring at a wall or something. This just made a lot of sense to me.

  8. nice structure to the poem--the back and forth and the movement of the eyes all go together. good job

  9. I like the subject a great deal. It's something all creative people feel at times, as you well know.

The villanelle is growing on me too. This is very well structured.

  10. It's great how you took inertia and turned it into poetry!

  11. Love can be a state of mind sometimes. Especially when lovers are apart.

Sometimes that is all they have to cling to.

  14. Guatami -

Yes, the "block". How frustrating it can be.

"with not as much as a movement of my eyes." I really love this refrain. It illuminates the paralyzed feeling one has when they are trapped inside their head, unable to bring forth the words or the vision.

    Well done!

  15. An intriguing premise and poem. This could become an entire series of verses.

  16. Hi Gautami! I really like this very much -- it took me in and felt like what I've definitely experienced with inertia. You really captured the process and journey of it. And the villanelle form is wonderful, especially for the way inertia goes back and forth. Have a great weekend!

  17. What should you do when your "get up and go has got up and gone"?
Open the door and go for a walk.

Since the dawn of recorded history, many famous writers have dealt with mental constipation by ingesting spirits to chase their muse.

    Whatever works for you.

  18. Since vilanelle is a high-energy form, it relates interestingly to inertia as a theme.

  19. Thanks to all of you for the comments.

Some of you think, it is about writer's block.

I suppose I did not get it across properly. It is NOT about writers block. My Muse is as kind as ever. This is more to do with that kind ofINERTIA, which prevents us from doing ANYTHING at all. The day I wrote it, I had been feeling like that.

AS for as villanelle goes, I think the form suits where there is sense of drama. I turned it around for inertia.

Tom, thanks. I am considering that.

  21. Once embraced, villanelle is quite beautiful...you've captured both inertia and structure with such panache...well done!

  26. You seem to have really taken to the villanelle form. My inertia was such that I took this week off.

  27. Villanelles are interesting to write.
Those kind of keep the mind in order, thoughts in perspective.
