whoever said she has got great gift
of the gab gave her a good back stab
you grab her words with your might
when moon looks askance at night
she burrow herself in deep shadows
hiding herself from her eternal foes
all the while she spits fire from her lips
her cursing words are yours for keeps
afterwards she so wishes to be a good witch
mending your torns parts with tiny stitches
she tries to keep her feet from dragging
Believe her when she says she is not bragging
shrugging her shoulders she will go on
tearing you apart, she will gnaw on your bone
by now you must know, hers is not a gift
of the gab. she is nothing but an old hag

I began it as a fun poem. Somehow it ended this way...
Just a fun poem? You nailed it perfectly! How often is bragging just a way of saying, "I am great and you are not"?
ReplyDeleteSerendipitous ending. BJ
ReplyDeleteNah, it's still fun. Just because it's a little dark doesn't mean it can't be fun.
ReplyDeleteNice one! poetry should be fun and sometime dark.
ReplyDeleteYour rhyming couplets give this a whimsical feel.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny the way a poem goes where it wants to go?
Love it!
Nice!
ReplyDelete"she burrow herself in deep shadows
hiding herself from her eternal foes" - this line really spoke to me!

ReplyDeletea bit of cutting wit... I enjoyed the read -- thanks!

Wonderful poem.
ReplyDeleteSomething in mind
when pen them down
turn out to be different
mind is very powerful.
What a wicked little poem . Loved it.
ReplyDeletePoem will do things like that: change their mood while we are not looking.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a dysfunctional relationship-still a great poem though.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing it.
I like it!!
ReplyDeleteHa! I know a few hags myself, guatami! And I enjoyed your light-hearted fun with a not-so good witch!
ReplyDeleteI loved 'when moon looks askance at night' That and the good witch both give your poem a Halloween vibe!
Loved this. And we all know such people.
ReplyDeleteThe fun of this is in part the surreal moment at the end. Great stuff.
ReplyDelete"you grab her words with your might
ReplyDeletewhen moon looks askance at night"
Love these lines
I like dark! And I think this one can be read for "fun" or for "dark" or for "dark fun" - very versatile! :-)
ReplyDeleteReally great poem! Loved every line!
ReplyDeleteThis was a fun read and great use of the prompt. I liked the twists and turns along the way to the ending.

Amazing here words lead us, eh? Enjoyed this one. How are you, Gautami?
ReplyDeleteTruth usually finds its way out. Nice job! XXOO
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, the charming chatty soul, whose smile is venom and whose words are laced with poison. We've all met them.
ReplyDeleteHi Gautami, love the bit about eternal foes, you really must be tuned in to some good stuff!
ReplyDeleteGift of the gab - another 'gift' we often abuse or mis-direct.
ReplyDeleteComedic observations do not arrive via happy thoughts in the warm puppy part of your brain...
ReplyDeletehonest comedy sears our consciousness because it arises from the darkest, unswept, corners of the soul.
Nothing wrong with a shift in direction! I enjoyed this read and surely can relate to it!!
ReplyDeleteI really like the dark humor in this poem. Isn't it amazing where the words lead!
ReplyDeletehappy diwali Gautami!
ReplyDeletebig hugs.
I was thinking Halloween when I read this, too. It is a fun poem!
ReplyDeleteso witty! especially the spitting fire of lips...for keeps, i like saying it over and over :)
ReplyDeletestill fun. I like it
ReplyDeleteenjoyed this!
ReplyDeleteOy vey!
ReplyDelete'She' seems like the hag of mythology. Wonder what she turns into if she's ever, really, kissed?
Thanks--
Nicely done. All 'fun' peotry doesn't have to be light in nature. it reminds me of children's poetry, actually, and how most of those teach a life lesson whilst also being fun.
ReplyDeleteg, that is so very very good... "..spits fire from her lips.." and "..with tiny stitches..." she will gnaw on your bone... ouch... i pray i do not meet her soon...
ReplyDeletea very witty reminder to use one's words wisely!
