with piercing eyes
she appraises her province,
concern for her cubs
utmost in her mind.
calling for security
until they are grown up
enough to sustain,
independent of her.
nurturing instinct
being strongest
for a mother to be.
all her wildernesses
gone for a while,
Leola stands tall!
Being a member of the Shameless Lions Writing Circle, I named my lion, Leola and wrote this 48 words poem for her. She may be fierce and brave but when maternal instinct takes over....
I love poems about mother animals and the concern they have for their children. Sometimes it is interesting in nature to see what animals just have children and leave them to fend on their own and which ones stay to take care of them. The picture does a lot to compliment your piece. Excellent job.
ReplyDeleteI think you have a maternal instinct some where inside of you!
ReplyDeleteA good one. I love lions wherever they occur - in my case in books mostly!:) Strange, 48 is said to be 'our number' - mystically, the number which makes us human beings...!:)
ReplyDeleteA loyal and faithful guardian, wonderfully honored in your poem!!
ReplyDeletehow the might lion came down to earth. is it us humans who downplay the mighty, or is it natures will to create a life in two extremes. But at that, the maternal instinct is the most fitting.
ReplyDeletemichele sent em to say hi
ReplyDeletePat nailed it...guardian. Gargoyles protect sacred places. Enjoyed your poem as well.
ReplyDeletebeautiful!
ReplyDeleteand a great tribute to motherhood (love anything with lions in it)
gautami,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the pride. You've chosen well. I think Leola will guide you to write your best...being a mother and all she will work hard to see her charges succeed.

Loved this. The picture accompanying it is so unique and adds something to the poem.
ReplyDeleteLeola is a beautiful name!
ReplyDeleteKeshi.
"Leola".
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely name. :)
I saw one of these before...a patchwork one. In Nags Head NC they have decorated wild horses like these. Michele sent me today.
ReplyDeletei'm a bit that way myself
ReplyDelete(paternally of course
grrrrrr (that's my lion impression)
enjoyed this
thank you
surely THE most powerful instinct of all is mother love. protective. comforting and boy, if you attempt to hurt the baby...WATCH OUT!
ReplyDeletegreat poem again.
Thanks for the recommend! I have never had Indian food, I will have to try it!
ReplyDeletei very much enjoyed your poem and words aobut nurturing. i also believe it is an instinct that protects and comforts as naturally as breathing. i've read about parents who singlehandedly lift a car off their trapped children and i think that super natural ability must come from instinct.
ReplyDelete:)

Nice poem--the image of the lion made me think of C. S. Lewis' Aslan
ReplyDeleteI love the name you chose. Leola. wonderful poem too, such fierce pride for family. moving write.
ReplyDeleteI really liked your poem. You definitely took an original slant for the background of your lion...my lion's story is still evolving. I did manage to write my poem but I want to do a little something every day with my lion (Nin).
ReplyDeleteI am happy to meet Leola & love the name. :-)
I think you have chosen your lion well. She complements your poem; your poem reflects her and motherhood. I have been that lioness, for a moment or two.
ReplyDeleteWhen I adopted a lion, I knew it had be a female! That too a mother. I chose to name her Leola!
ReplyDeleteThe maternal instinct in any species is beyond anything. Leola is no different. She watches over her brood vigilantly!
Thanks for you supposrt and comments.
This is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteHi, would you please pass this note along to Leola? I invite her to come visit me on my new blog, Literary Lion of Lyon. She would probably recognize me from the blog’s title, but tell her Roary sent the invitation. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteRoary ^..^
Hi Gautami, Leola radiates incredible energy -- strong, fierce, and a powerfully loving mother and guardian. And your poem captures this beautifully. Very nice.
